Hey guys,
It has been 3 weeks since I picked up my Golf R, and I finally found some time from school and work to post up my purchase and review on the car so far.
History and Why:
I am a Honda enthusiast, and have never owned a VW before. I had been driving an S2000 for the last couple years. Whilest incredible fun, the S2k wasnt very practical. I wanted something really fun to drive but really practical. There wasnt anything on the market till I saw a rendering of the Golf R on Autoblog like 3 years ago, and I thought it was the perfect combo. I went to Europe for 2 weeks in the summer of 2010, and rented a Scirocco 6-spd, and fell in love with VW. The car was brilliant, and the hatchback was incredibly useful during the trip! I was convinced, and when VW finally allowed the US market to order the R, I put a deposit down in April of 2011 for a fully loaded, 4-door, CW Golf R at Capistrano VW in SoCal.
Delivery and Pickup:
It was a great experience purchasing through CapoVW, and my salesman(Moe) was very attentive to my requests. I am one of those owners who is very particular about having a clean car (with no swirls in the paint, etc), and since this was my first new car purchase, I wanted to be the one to uncover the car at the dealership. I also told them to skip the machine wash (so the paint would be factory fresh). So I took the car home dirty from the month long boat ride (on the Rhea Leader), still covered with stickers and wrappings on the car.
Once I got the car home, then came 2 days of cleaning and prepping the car (clay bar, wax, etc).
Review:
I just passed 500 miles on the odometer, and finally took the car to 7k rpms after the initial break-in period. Wow, this car is a blast to drive. Its really quick in a straight line. I have never driven a performance car with FI nor AWD. The grip is phenomenal, it never gives up! The steering is very communicative, and the gearbox is very good. Overall, I have to saw is this car is brilliant! It is the full package.
Things I like so far:
The quality of the interior is far superior than the S2000. Very Audi like. Every switch has such a German crisp feel to it, I love that!
The RNS315 is a very quick and responsive NAV/audio unit. I like the SD card feature very much and the DYNaudio system is the best factory audio system I have ever heard!
The KESSY system and Bluetooth audio has really spoiled me, since I didnt have that in my old car.
The practicality and usability of this car is great, especially since you can fold down the seats and haul a bunch of stuff.
A 4dr, hatchback, 6-spd, AWD German car. Nothing on the market has all those features!!
Things I Dislike: (I am being very picky)
I weighed the car when I got home. A fully loaded 4-dr Golf R weighs 3410lbs with no fuel. That is pretty heavy, and you can feel it during turn in. But somehow the AWD system just grips and grips. (I do have to thank VW from removing about 150-200lbs of weight from the MK V R)
I dont like how the DRLs turn off when the park brake is on, and dim when HIDs are on.
Not being able to fully defeat stability control is a bummer.
Finished mods:
Clear bra
Ceramic Window Tint. (Medium Front, Dark Back. Looks great!)
LED Tails.They look amazing!
R badge on Lumbar support seat handle.
Future mods:
After 5k miles, I will do a Stage 1+ tune. I feel like learning the car first, is not a bad idea. I will be jealous of all you guys doing it immediately! 330hp+ sounds like a lot of fun!
I just bought a set of Team Dynamics Pro Race 1.2 rims (17 X 8, ET45, 5 X 112) in black. They weigh 19.8 lbs and fit over the front calipers nicely. TDs weigh much less than the stock rims. I also bought a set of Yokahama AD08s, 235/45R17s. They look sweet and I cant wait to mount this set on my car in the next month or so. Gonna loose about 4lbs unsprung weight from each corner, so 16lbs overall will be a nice performance gain.
I am really enjoying the car so far and I am happy to join this small niche of VW fanatics who admire this car as much as I do.
