Hey all!
I have a few problems that I think I could use some help on. I have done some searching but I want to make sure all of my symptoms are considered as I assume they are related.
I drive a 2003 VW Jetta TDI with 170k miles. Most of my driving is highway and most of the maintenance is my own.
First, the car is very hard to start when it's cold. It turns over weakly and for around 5 seconds and a whole lot of diesel-smelling gray smoke comes out. Once it starts it idles relatively roughly and lope a tad.
Next, when the engine is to operating temperature there is always a good amount of black smoke if the engine revs over 3k (I can see it in my rear view mirror at night when other cars are behind me).
Finally it always idles a bit rougher than other TDIs I have heard. I hear a rattling at idle too. I understand that in these cars the dual mass flywheel can make some rattling noise at idle.
Is this oil in the turbo? Dirty injectors? A failing fuel pump?
I change oil regularly with Shell Rotella full synthetic and use a diesel fuel additive in every tank. I just ran some lucas injector cleaner.
