The Elantra was also crowned the 2012 North American Car of the Year at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit in January.
The Elantra’s competition for the Canadian award was its smaller sibling the Hyundai Accent, as well as the Kia Optima.
The Canadian Utility Vehicle of the Year award was handed to the Volkswagen Touareg TDI, which beat out the BMW X3 and Dodge Journey. The Touareg was also a finalist in 2010 and 2011, but came up short both years.
Two other awards were doled out on press day. The Hyundai Veloster earned the Best New Design award, besting competition from Jaguar (XKR-S) and Land Rover (Range Rover Evoque), while General Motors won for Best New Technology with its Voltec Propulsion System. Also up for that award was GM’s eAssist system and Mazda’s SkyActiv G technologies.
Each year, members of the Automobile Journalists Association of Canada (AJAC) test dozens of new vehicles over the course of four days in order to select several category winners in the Car of the Year program. From there, a shortlist is chosen consisting of three finalists each for Canadian Car of the Year and Canadian Utility Vehicle of the Year.
Last years Canadian Car of the Year winner was the Chevrolet Cruze, and Canadian Utility Vehicle of the Year was the Ford Edge.
