I know TCL is flooded with these threads, but whatevs. They're fun and I wana make sure I'm not overlooking anything. :P
Anyway, around October the warranty on my Rabbit will expire and I plan to start looking at trade ins. Reasons being 1) Automotive ADD 2) I'd like to lower my monthly payments and overall transportation cost.
I'll be looking for a car that can carry two adults and a 50lb dog comfortably. It doesn't have to be balls to the wall fast, but it still needs to have that fun factor. I'd say minimum 16 second quarter mile, ideally closer to 15 or less. I commute 120 miles a day, so good gas mileage is a huge huge plus. We also take frequent summer road trips, so it needs to be comfortable and have room for a couple of bags and some dog gear. We also have a pickup and a Jetta though, so I don't need massive cargo capacity either (though I won't shun it). Halfway decent handling is important too as a good chunk of my commute is through the mountains. As is reliability with the amount of driving I do. Hopefully something that can be taken to 175k miles with reasonable expectations of no major issues. Cheaper parts than my MKV would be a bonus as well, but not an absolute requirement if the vehicle is reliable.
Bulletpoint requirements:
-Can be readily found for $10K with ~75,000 miles or less on the clock.
-Reliable.
-Minimum 18/25mpg, ideally 20/27+.
-Carries 2 adults, 1 50lb dog, and an extended weekend worth of gear comfortably.
-"Fun factor". Good handling, decent acceleration. Doesn't have to be a wacecar, but it's gotta keep my attention.
-Comfortable on road trips.
-If not available with a manual, it's gotta have a really-really good manumatic.
-Minimum 5000k mile service intervals.
Bonus points:
-Affordable parts.
-Affordable insurance.
-Leather.
I've been considering: 24valve MK4's, 01-06 Cooper S's, E46's, and B5 Passats.
Perhaps even: first gen Audi TT Coupes, Scion Tc?
I realize a few of those might be pushing it, but it's just a starter list. Anyway, lemme know what yous guys think. I've mostly driven and am familiar with European cars, but I'm really open to anything.
Here's what I currently drive. An 08 Rabbit with 75,000 miles on the clock. I bought it "new" in 2010 as old inventory.
